Tonimo Foundation

Empowering poor and vulnerable communities with livelihood skills, Provision of educational support to disadvantaged children and youth, advocating for and protecting the rights of children, youth and women against all forms of violence

Founding

Tonny Ocak, Founder and Executive Director grew up in an Internally Displaced Person Camp (IDPs) in Apala, Northern Uganda during the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) insurgency that lasted for over twenty years.
Tonny is a victim of the violence as he was abducted at the age of 11 by a group of rebels that were being led by the notorius figure - Odyambo John, who was a commander of Joseph Kony, the leader of LRA. Tonny witnessed alot of abuse and violence towards women, youth and children. He was able to escape and after loitering for about three to four days trying to find his way home, he was by chance identified and rescued by Amuka- a military group that worked alongside the Uganda People's Defence Forces.
Tonny thereafter lived in Apala camp witnessing and experiencing tough economic situation, deprivation of education, basic needs and also witnessing domestic violence. Northen Uganda has never fully recovered from the twenty-year insurgency and people who were victims still suffer, infact, many children are being born as victims todate due to the post traumatic effect on the communities.

The above mentioned experience and the deep passion to contribute to the social economic improvement of the affected communities motivated the creation of TONIMO FOUNDATION.
